Description of Needlearts Appraisal (NAP) Program

All who are curious about the value of needlework, whether a collection of antiques or contemporary pieces, will enjoy this certification program. Upon completing the program, you will have the knowledge required to value both antique and contemporary needlework. You will undertake a journey that will introduce you to many types of needlework across time and around the world.

You will take away the knowledge of needlework materials, styles and motifs that can help identify a piece of needlework that unlock both its monetary value and cultural meaning.

Program Structure

NAP is a self-study program. The candidate works independently with guidance from a mentor who is an experienced ANG appraiser. It is a three-year program that is divided into four levels. Each level includes study of both needlework and the professional appraisal practice. With successful completion of a level of study the candidate moves to the next level.

This progression challenges the candidate to learn increasingly complex material and apply the material learned in the previous levels. Learning is accomplished through:

  • Extensive reading
  • Writing assignments
  • Practical exercises
  • Research and analysis
  • Open-book testing
  • Oral exams
  • Preparation of formal appraisal reports

Program Outcomes

Upon completing the Program, the candidate will have developed:

  • In-depth appreciation of American, Western and non-Western needlework, both historical and contemporary, including materials, techniques, styles and dominant motifs. The Program scope includes styles executed with needle in hand such as canvas work, surface embroidery, tambour work, gold work, Opus Anglicanum, whitework, cutwork, pulled thread work, and needle lace.
  • Connoisseurship of select styles, eras and/or techniques.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities to develop an opinion of value for a needlework property consistent with Unified Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Eligibility

All ANG members are eligible to apply for admission to the Program. Admission is determined by the Program Chairman and Vice Chairman after review of a candidate’s application and resumé.

Candidates must pay the admission fee to enter the program and additional fees to progress from level to level (see Fee Structure below).
